A few months back I really got sick of my computer always being slow and having system errors. So I started doing a bit of research and heard of a new browser called "Firefox".

After a few months of going through it I started to see a huge difference in my computers performance and as a result in my own productivity online and off. This was a direct result of using the Firefox browser. So I then started to learn the features that came with it and I realized that this browser had A LOT more features than I had ever seen or used on any other browser. As I started to mention this to my co-workers and friends and family they all got interested in the browser and decided to install it on their own systems.

Thats when the questions started.

It didn't matter where I went, I ran into someone who had a question or questions on "How do I do this?" or "How do I do that?" Realizing that I was never going to get any work done I sat down with my programmer and we decided to hit the challenge head on and "Firefox: How to..." was born.

So I am proud to introduce to you my newest product creation with the help of my programmer, S. Murphy, "Firefox: How to..."

I read this article from Wikipedia awhile ago and read some other sites commenting and comparing Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox and I realize that I made a right choice.

I am a Mozilla Firefox user and I really appreciate the simplicity and the fast speed of this browser. Compared to Internet Explorer, Firefox is a fast, lean tabbed browser. Unlike in IE, my desktop is kinda messy if I open lots of sites. I can't figured out what my taskbar look like if I open lots of website. IE was no lean tabbed browser before. In there IE beta 7 released last July 27, 2005, they added this feature "tabbed", it is where you can also open websites in the same IE. I like this feature but, still I observed, its still slow. My old PC hangs up in a matter of seconds sometimes minutes to load website. That's one reason why I seldom use IE specially if the workstation is so slow and some kinda old. I think I'm not the only user experienced the same situation.

This week at accomplished seo I have seen a number of great articles on the web with people’s preferred Firefox addons. I agree with some them and have also found some new ones to play with. So to return the favour, so to speak, I am going to release what i think are the most useful Firefox addons in regard to web development and Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). An additional bonus is that ‘Top 10’s’ always make good link bait in SEO (there’s a tip for you SEOs and blog writers!). This list is written in no particular order so lets start…

1) ‘All in One SideBar‘ this, and it has to be said is my favorite, allows you to access and manage all your Firefox addons through a side bar which is incorporated in to your browser. This is real over kill if you are a normal web user, but for a developer it isn’t half handy. 2) ‘Web developer tool bar‘, I prefer this to the ever popular firebug, which i also have installed, although it doesn’t have any functions to debug javascript, it is a great tool for development and tests CSS on the fly. Mozilla Firefox is an excellent web browser that does a much better job than Internet Explorer when it comes to protecting your privacy and computer security. Unfortunately, Firefox can sometimes be slower than Internet Explorer. The speed difference between the two browsers is one of the main reasons why most people do not change their browser from the quicker yet more vulnerable Internet Explorer to the slower but more secure Firefox browser, the other reason being that Firefox introduces many new features that simply take more time to learn than some users are willing to invest. To get the best of both worlds - speed and security of browsing - you can download Mozilla Firefox and speed it up with these tips.

Pipelining

This tweak is very easy to accomplish. On your Firefox web browser address bar, type about:config, then press Enter. Scroll through the list of values and look for these three crucial pipelining settings: network.http.pipelining, network.http.proxy.pipelining, and network.http.pipelining.maxrequests. You can use the filter to easily find each of these entries.

For the pipelining entry, you should change the value to true. Just double click the false value to make this change. For the maxrequests entry, the default setting is four. Change the value to your desired number. This value determines how many page requests Firefox is capable of making. You can go as high as 8 to speed up your tabbed browsing. Finally, go to proxy.pipelining and change the value from false to true.

Doing the above steps will give you greater browsing speeds by allowing Firefox to process and send requests simultaneously instead of waiting until a response has been received from a previous request. This will also reduce network bottlenecks by packing multiple requests into a single data packet.

Increase Your Firefox Memory Cache

Your computer will automatically allot a memory cache for your Firefox browser. Increasing your browser cache will actually increase the amount of objects that your browser can retain, which cuts down on time spent retrieving information from your hard disk or a web server. As a result, your frequently visited pages will load much faster.

You can modify the cache settings by going to the Firefox tools menu and clicking on Options. From here, click on the "Advanced" tab, then the "Network" tab. On the network tab, you can specify any cache size you like, but it is doubtful you will need more than about 32 Megabytes of cache.

Block Unwanted Advertisements

One of the best ways to speed up Firefox is by using an Ad Removal extension, such as AdBlock Plus. AdBlock Plus can be installed at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865, and it works to block annoying banner ads. AdBlock Plus also features a "learning" feature, meaning you can right-click on unblocked ads and set them to be blocked, as well. Even with no other optimizations, Firefox will load most pages much faster than Internet Explorer when using AdBlock Plus, because it does not have to worry about downloading all of the annoying, unwanted ads that clutter up so many webpages.

Firefox was designed to replace the Mozilla Suite in 2003. Firefox was once known as the Phoenix and Firebird, however both of these names were associated with other applications and so the name finally became Mozilla Firefox in 2004 better known as Firefox for short.

The original Firefox was released on February 9th of 2004 the first version was 1.0. Mozilla then released the more secure and stable version 1.5 on November 29, 2005 with version 2 to follow shortly behind in 2006.

When you go to the Firefox website for your download, you need to scroll down to the bottom of the screen where you will find your language. Once your Language is chosen you will then be directed to the user agreement page, after accepting the rules, after which the download page will load up. Here if you have not already noticed you will see that it comes with the Google Toolbar. The toolbar is your choice, and can be bypassed during the easy installation process.

Yes, IE may come installed on your PC when your Windows was but I have found Firefox to be an easier and definitely more reliable way to search and save web pages both online and off.

Firefox comes with a few Key Features as mentioned on their web page. Mozilla Firefox 3.0, the resurgent browser developer has come of age with its latest offering. The new browser has been downloaded well over 8 million times in 24 hours as against the developer's target of 5 million and has entered the Guinness Book of World Records for maximum number of downloads in a single day of download history. Tracy anti-spam software develops glitch

TRACY -- Everybody gets them. It's just that Tracy City Hall isn't a place you'd expect to see them.

Spam e-mail, identical messages sent in bulk, cluttered the inboxes of everyone with a city

e-mail address recently. The mass electronic mailers ran the gamut from offers of cheap Rolex watches and proclamations that the recipient was an international lottery winner. Some were just plain explicit.

Tracy City Councilwoman Suzanne Tucker said the city had a "very effective" spam filter that would quarantine questionable e-mails and notify recipients of flagged messages later.

"You could delete (the quarantined message), or go through it and see what you had received," Tucker said. "Then all of a sudden, I started getting two or three spams a day, and they were pretty crude."

Matt Robinson, city spokesman, said the problem flared up when the software used to filter the spam was upgraded and began offering anti-virus protection.

The enhancements conflicted with the city's current anti-virus software, leading to the spam filters being taken down. The resulting problem was the butt of several jokes at Tracy City Hall, but the situation "wasn't bad."

"It was out of the ordinary, because the old system worked so well," Robinson said. "You just didn't normally see (the spam). Most folks just shrugged it off."

Internet researchers estimate the worldwideflared up when the software used to filter the spam was upgraded and began offering anti-virus protection.

The enhancements conflicted with the city's current anti-virus software, leading to the spam filters being taken down.

Robinson said the city is customer-service oriented and not just toward the public. He said questionable e-mails would be forwarded to the information systems department, where they would be examined.

"The IS department is tasked with giving good customer service to our employees," Robinson said. "They jumped on this fast and fixed the problem."

Mozilla Firefox, The Newest Threat To Internet Explorer For Security

While most people still use Internet Explorer as their web browser, a new one has surfaced and has started to get more and more people interested. I’m talking about Mozilla Firefox, an open-source browser that has many advantages that could help your business, while having very minor flaws.

Advantages

The first thing you will notice when browsing the World Wide Web with this browser is that you won’t get as many pop-ups as you normally would, which is a great advantage in itself and is worth downloading just for that feature. I tried it on a web page where normally with IE I would get 5 pop-ups, I went on the same page with Firefox and found out that no pop-ups were appearing!!! I tried it again with a page that would have given me 3 of those nasty things, to find out that again nothing was appearing. After doing some research on many sites with pop-ups. I can state by doing some research on over 100 sites with pop-ups that Firefox will block around 95% of them.

Another advantage is that while Internet Explorer still gives you the option to delete the cookies, clear the history and such, Mozilla Firefox will do all of that at one click of the mouse.

Disadvantage

The only minor flaw that Firefox might have is that some sites are not currently set-up to accept it, mainly small web sites. This though is not a major thing, as only 1% of sites are affected by this.

Closure

While I don’t suggest you to delete IE from your computer and go only with Firefox, I can say that since I changed, I rarely went back to IE, and the times I did were only to check a site that was not appearing correctly with Firefox. Firefox is really the browser of the future, that’s for sure.

IE Vs. Firefox

Internet explorer has been the dominate browser since as long as I can remember. Despite the warnings of its security flaws, it always seemed to work. However I believe its finally met its match.

Firefox has plenty of improvements and ease of use that make it a fast growing rival to the king. The feature that most stands out to this user is tabbed browsing. It is much more convenient to jump from tab to tab than to have lots of open windows. Especially if you like to have a lot of windows open at once. What I love is the security.

In IE, for me at least, certain web sites will not remove from history. I like my history to be clean at the start of each day. Right now my IE has web sites that are there even if I delete history, off-line files, and cookies. Firefox removes history and other data cleanly. I get a fresh start everyday. Firefox also has a feature to disable flash. Which can come in handy on highly “flashy” sites that distract you away from the content.

Firefox is proving to be a better browser. It will be interesting to see what IE conters with in IE 7.

Why Firefox is Better Than Internet Explorer

I want to make some quick comparison to show the differences between Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

1. Memory usage. I heard many times: "Firefox is using too much memory". I have opened 9 tabs in Firefox, and 9 tabs in Internet Explorer, the results:

--Memory used by IE and firefox shows that Internet explorer is using more memory than Firefox.

2. Pop-ups. Firefox has an integrated pop-up blocker, when you enter a website with pop-ups, firefox tell you that a pop-up for that website was blocked, but if you want to see that pop-up, it have option to allow pop-ups for that website. Why you need to use 3rd party pop-up blockers or other softwares, when you can have it with firefox ? I don't have to mention that Internet explorer don't have integrated pop-up blocker.

3. Browsing speed. On internet explorer, all page elements are loaded before the page is displayed, so if the page have a lot of images and elements in it, will be displayed with some delay after you type the address in the address bar. Firefox shows the page elements and images immediately after they are loaded, and you will see first the header, then the menu. You don't need to wait to see the header until the footer is loaded.

4. Loading speed, there isn't too much difference between the two browsers, the experts demonstrated that firefox is a little faster that internet explorer, but the difference is too small to include this in comparison.

5. Restore Session. If your operating system crashes while you are browsing, you will not loose anything. Probably you heard many times: "Your computer needs to be restarted to complete the installation, please save all your work and close all programs before continue", but with firefox you can ignore these messages, if you shut down or restart your computer without closing firefox, next time you want to start it you will get a message asking you if you want to restore session or open a new one.

6. Plugins. In firefox you can quick install plugins to do different things. Go to Tools -> Add -ons to manage plugins. To find plugins, follow the "Get Extensions" link. It will forward you to mozilla plugin directory. Will Firefox Win the Browser War?

For as long as you can remember the basic Internet browser was Internet Explorer. Of course, there was a moment in time when Netscape was trying to get that market share, but Internet Explorer won out and there are many people that don’t realize Internet Explorer is only their browser and they can change if they like. In fact, most folks believe Internet Explorer is the only option for reaching the Internet. However, this is not the case and there is a new kid on the block that is taking advantage of the security issues Internet Explorer has experienced and pulling a significant amount of market share in a short period of time. This newcomer web browser is Firefox.

Firefox is a browser that focuses on opening web sites rapidly while keeping those nasty pop-ups and spyware at bay. Firefox was in its final stages last summer and fortunately for the up and coming browser two federal agencies recommended Internet surfers choose a different browser than Internet Explorer due to security issues IE was facing. This timing was perfect for Firefox and when it was placed on the web for download there were so many people trying to download at once the server almost could not handle all of the requests.

However, Firefox came through and many web surfers switched from Internet Explorer. Mozilla Vs. Firefox

For those who are unclear on the differences between the Mozilla package (Netscape is also comparable to Mozilla except they're two different companies) and Firefox / Thunderbird, here it is:

Mozilla is a complete package meaning it comes with email, browser, address book, newsgroup, and chat applications integrated.
FireFox is a stand-alone browser application. It doesn't have email built-in. There is a chatzilla extension available.
Thunderbird is the stand-alone email application. It doesn't have a browser built-in. The address book is included.
If you use Mozilla for email and click on a link within an email, it will open them in Mozilla not FireFox even when FireFox is the default browser.
The applications are similar, yet different. The look and feel is different. It requires experiencing it for yourself to understand this.
Commands and features are not identical. For instance, Mozilla has F9 to open the sidebar with search, history, bookmarks, etc. whereas FireFox only opens Bookmarks and History in the sidepanel via Ctrl+B and Ctrl+H respectively. There are a few extensions to do more with this.
FireFox has fewer options because it doesn't have other applications integrated with it, which can make it easier to modify.

What Makes Mozilla's Firefox Attractive?

If you're much of a tech geek, you probably have at least heard of the "browser war" between Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Mozilla's Firefox. For years, Microsoft Internet Explorer has had a near monopoly on the browser market. Sure, they had a little competition from Netscape, but not much. That has all changed with Firefox. Mozilla's Firefox has put a large dent in the IE market share.

But why? What makes Firefox attractive? As a Firefox user, I think I can tell you. I can at least tell you what attracts me to Firefox.

Tabbed Browsing. This feature is a huge plus to me. As an Internet marketer, I can do some heavy duty web browsing. It's a lot easier to have 25 tabs open that 25 windows.

Search Features. Firefox has that cool search bar in the upper right hand corner. With the click of a button, I can search using any one of many search engines. This is another feature that is very attractive to Internet marketers.

Extensions. Firefox add-ons are a lot easier to come by that IE add ons, probably because Firefox is completely open source. Sure, there are plenty of IE toolbars, but there are tons of Firefox tools, that can do all kinds of cool stuff.

Skins. I don't really care too much about this feature, but you can customize your Firefox browser with a cool design - for free.

Security. Last but not least, Microsoft Internet Explorer has been exploited many, many times by various security threats. Mozilla's Firefox is less susceptible to security breaches, so many people use Firefox to stay secure on the net.

These are just the major benefits that Firefox offers. Interestingly enough, Microsoft is trying to add many of these features to their IE 7. If the sincerest form of flattery is imitation, Microsoft itself admits that Firefox is great!

By now, just about everyone has heard of Firefox, and most understand that it's an
Internet browser similar to Internet Explorer. You've also probably been told that you should use it because it's more secure. But what does that mean to you? Why should you give up Internet Explorer, one of the most familiar programs that you use on a daily basis so that you can say you're "more secure"? Well, I'll tell you why, and also explain dozens of other benefits that Firefox offers that will make your online surfing safer and definitely more entertaining.

The topic of security between Firefox and Internet Explorer really grinds down to open source versus proprietary software, which I will only touch base with at this time. Naturally the two programs have completely different features, but the "secure" part refers to the architecture of how the programs are built and how quickly newly discovered security flaws are patched. The beauty of an open source project, like Firefox, is that countless programmers world-wide contribute their expertise to continually enhance Firefox to perform as stable and secure as possible. There are also several features that set Firefox apart from it's competitors. Tabbed browsing was an idea that Firefox popularized, and is now emulated by several other browsers fighting to usurp Firefox from its ever-growing command in the ongoing browser war. This function enables you to open up "tabs" in the same browser window so that you can view several pages without having to launch the same program several times. Internet Explorer 7 now offers this exact same feature. However, have you ever tried to completely erase your tracks from the browser history? In Internet Explorer 6 there about so many places you have to go (history, temporary files, cookies, etc...), and they are all in different locations. Firefox makes this easy by going to "Tools - Clear Private Data", and it swipes clean all your personal information out of the program (another idea IE 7 copied). You can also customize the placement of the toolbars and icons, and add, remove, or rearrange buttons the way you want them. For example, if you want to add a button to open a new tab, you go to "View - Toolbars - Customize" then drag and drop the "New Tab" button to where you want it to sit in the navigation bar. DownThemAll! is an incredible extension that will enable you to download every picture on a website, instead of having to click each pic, right-click, and choose "Save As". Forecastfox allows you to specify a specific location and then displays the current temperature complete with a clever symbol of the current weather (sunshine, clouds, etc...) in the bottom right hand corner of Firefox. Another more entertaining extension is StumbleUpon. Ever wonder how other people find all the cool stuff on the Internet? Using StumbleUpon, you can specify your individual interests, and when you click the "Stumble" button it will take you to a random page in one of the categories you specified that others have ranked as "Thumbs Up". From there you can rate it thumbs up, thumbs down, or simply Stumble again. Just try it, you'll see what I mean and how fun it can be. There are several other extensions that I'm sure you'll find interesting, just go here to check them out.

Firefox Themes allows you to customize the look and feel of the browser design. Themes can be thought of the same way some other programs refer to "skins". You can select a theme that is more sleak, perhaps reflects your personality, or stick with the default. The best way I can describe this awesome feature is to go there and browse around.

But how do you keep up with the latest versions of Firefox, its themes, and its extensions? When a new version of Firefox is released, it will actually download the updates and notify you that the next time Firefox is restarted it will automatically install the newest version; which is exactly what it does. To update themes and extensions, go to "Tools-Extensions" and "Tools-Themes", respectively, and click "Find Updates". If there are any new versions available, you click "Install" on each one and the next time you restart Firefox you'll have the latest and greatest version.

Hopefully by now you understand that no matter what proprietary browsers do to try to keep up, it's hard to compete with the collective ideas of the entire world. Not to mention that Google heavily endorses Firefox, so many of the gadgets offered work hand-in-hand with some of Google's products. Firefox 3.0 release date targeted at Bug list broken down into two sections: Those with high complexity/risk and localization impact, and those with less risk and no/low localization impact. Bugs in the former category targeted to be fixed by 2004-09-20 for Firefox 1.0 RC1.

There is a new bugzilla nomination flag - blocking-aviary1.0RC1. We are now going to be fairly tight fisted about approvals here since we prefer to hit our target dates than become sidetracked. We would like to keep the bug list as similar in length to or shorter than what it is now. Basically we are trying to maintain feasibility. This may mean that your pet bug may be minused. This is an unfortunate consequence of project management, but if you can produce a patch and make a case for your fix, it may be allowed in.

Also note that a class of fixes may be approved for RC1 but not for RC2, etc - we want to have a localization freeze at some point between RC1 and RC2 so are targeting RC1 as preliminary localization freeze, also we may be willing to take some bugs now, further from the 1.0 date that are riskier, but we may be less interested in taking them closer to the release date.

I suspect that the setup is so that the DLLs are preloaded when Windows starts up. It appears that this builder is using custom CRT DLLs optimized for specific platforms which is pretty slick. I did this on some of my older builds using inline code but it resulted in maintenance issues so I dropped it. But the approach of doing it in DLLs is very, very nice. I don?t have time to try the build out right now (and they probably wouldn?t run on my Mac anyways) but some BenchJS comparisons with the usual builders might be interesting on the 1.0.7 builds given that not everyone does trunk builds.

I have found a very interesting survey on SpreadFirefox which aims why are the people currently switching to Mozilla Firefox. The survey aims to know what is important for the users in Mozilla Firefox, thus helping Mozilla to build a more user oriented browser in the future.

Different people use Firefox for different reasons. Me myself, I use Firefox because it is more secure, has useful extensions and because I want to support the open-source community. On the other hand, am sure that there are people who are influenced by Microsoft?s monopoly and generally dislike it.

The development name for Mozilla Firefox 3 is Gran Paradiso. The precursory releases are codenamed ?Minefield?, as this is the name of the trunk builds. ?Gran Paradiso?, like other Firefox development names, is an actual place; in this case the highest mountain group in the Graian Alps. The development team has asked users to submit feature requests that they wish to be included in Firefox 3. On November 19, 2007, Firefox 3 Beta 1 was released. The second beta (Firefox 3 Beta 2) was released on December 18, 2007. With at least three total beta releases planned, it is estimated that Firefox 3 will be released in early 2008. LWN notes that ?[t]he redirect technique is arguably worse than the ping attribute?. Other new features include support for offline web applications, cross-site XMLHttpRequest, and APNG support.

Gecko 1.9 uses cairo as a graphics backend, allowing for improved graphics performance and better consistency of look and feel on various operating systems. Because of cairo?s lack of support for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me and Windows NT (versions 4.0 and below), and because Microsoft ended support for Windows 98 and Windows Me on July 11, 2006, Firefox 3 will not run on those operating systems. Similarly, the Mac version of Firefox 3 will only run on Mac OS X 10.4 or higher, but, unlike previous versions, will have a native Cocoa widget interface.

The Firefox Browser is a hot topic among computer professionals because they know that this browser has many features than his counterpart, Internet Explorer from Microsoft, don't have. In Firefox 2, Mozilla adopts an important security feature that Microsoft first added to IE 7, a phishing filter called Phishing Protection that helps protect against malicious Web sites that masquerade as banks, e-tailers, and other sites that might store financial data. Unlike with IE 7, Firefox’s phishing filter is enabled by default, which is of course a good idea. There’s just one problem: The Firefox Phishing Protection feature isn’t very sophisticated. It uses a blacklist of known dangerous sites, which isn’t an effective protection against modern electronic attacks that rely on social engineering as well as technical vulnerabilities in the underlying products you’re using online. What you need is something that can adapt to threats and update itself automatically.

Alternatively, Firefox lets you enable Google’s phishing filter, which is more effective because it is updated regularly and provides more advanced functionality. On the minus side, the terms of service for Google’s phishing filter literally explain that Google will violate your privacy if you use this product: “Google will log your action and the URL of the page [you visit],” the agreement reads. “It is possible that a URL sent to Google may itself contain personal information” (Figure). Hey, we all trust Google, right? And can you imagine the uproar that would occur if Microsoft did something even remotely this anti-privacy? Meanwhile’s Google’s phishing filter hasn’t caused any concern. Unbelievable.

In previous versions of Firefox, I used Netcraft’s toolbar to help protect against phishing attacks. And while I appreciate that Firefox now offers two integrated anti-phishing solutions, neither is particularly good and neither is as good as what Microsoft offers in IE 7. That’s a shame.

Incidentally, Mozilla initially responded to news that their solution was ineffective by publishing a paper on its Web site that seeks to prove that Firefox Phishing Protection is, in fact, more effective than IE 7’s Phishing Filter. However, a third party study–commissioned by Microsoft–had already reported this not to be true. So who’s right? Here’s what I know to be true: Blacklists are not effective and Google admits it probably will collect your personal information. Neither of those seems very good to me.

Now, since publishing this review, Mozilla has contacted me and told me that their blacklist is updated “regularly,” which is quite a bit more frequently than I previously understood. With phishing attacks, you need protection that is regularly updated, so this is at least acceptable.

Good Spam or Bad Spam - What''s the Difference?

"Are you good spam or bad spam?" This is the question I find echoing in my head sometimes when I am going through my email, as if it is part of some electronic Wizard of Oz. Have you ever given any thought to the fact that there really is a difference in spam? Not that I am defending anyone, but let me make my point and then you can decide for yourself.

Spam is such a hot issue and no one knows the "right" view of spam that fits everyone. You either: - will take all measures to prevent people from sending it to you - don't mind it at all and happily delete, delete, delete every day - OR hate it sometimes and ignore it other times.

I think I fall in the last category, which is what started me thinking about good and bad spam. My point of view has now developed into this:

BAD Spam-
-It is bad spam when you reply to it to be removed and it is returned to you because the address is made up. -It is bad spam when the removal link does not open a real url. -It is bad spam when you paste the message source into Spam Cop and the info you get back before clicking the "Send spam report" shows tons of dead ends and made up domains, etc.

This means that this "Cowardly Lion" harvested your address, and went to great lengths to cover their tracks in order not to get caught sending spam.

GOOD Spam-
-It is good spam when there is an actual person on the other end, apologizing for inconveniencing you.

What made it good spam? Because here is spam that you most likely will not get again, because it is more legit then the bad spam. These people are not out to break any rules, upset anyone, or ruin your day. 9 times out of 10 they really don't know any better and will learn, very quickly I might add.

Also, keep in mind that the Scarecrow in us does not ALWAYS remember every email we sign up for. It is possible to have signed up for something and a week later be flipping out because you are getting email from some unknown. If we only had a brain sometimes (Speaking for myself, of course).

It is also highly possible that someone is having fun subscribing you to things. Never count that one out, it happens all of the time.

GOOD vs BAD
Personally, I would much rather get NO spam, however if I had to choose, I would have to go with good spam. Bad spam demonstrates that the sender KNOWS what is NOT acceptable and went to all of this trouble and expense to hide behind this long trail of fake addresses. These are malicious acts, and down right dirty. Do they really think that what they are trying to sell in this manner is actually worth it? These are the people we should be upset with. These are the people that we need to be telling, "I'll get you my pretty, and your little server too!"

So, whether you agree or disagree, just try to keep in mind that -1. The whole world is not out to get you. -2. Not every piece of spam is sent with the same intent. And... -3. As the world around us continues to change, we will be seeing more and more companies resorting to sending their junk mail through email rather then the post office. (I think this is becoming a more desirable thing to us all, as it would be much safer, take less effort to get rid of, & is better for the environment.)

Now is the time to try to adjust our view and approach the issue with a level head. If we don't we will drive ourselves mad, and for what purpose? The changes in our world cause the internet to change. Soon you probably will find yourself saying, "I don't think we're in Kansas anymore".

Spam is unsolicited e-mail on the Internet. From the sender's point-of-view, it's a form of bulk mail, often to a list culled from subscribers to a Usenet discussion group or obtained by companies that specialize in creating e-mail distribution lists.

To the receiver, it usually seems like junk e-mail. In general, it's not considered good netiquette to send spam. It's generally equivalent to unsolicited phone marketing calls except that the user pays for part of the message since everyone shares the cost of maintaining the Internet.

Some apparently unsolicited e-mail is, in fact, e-mail people agreed to receive when they registered with a site and checked a box agreeing to receive postings about particular products or interests. This is known as both opt-in e-mail and permission-based e-mail.

Spam also bogs down the internet with unneccessary transactions to the point that I have seen it crash servers that have to deal with literally thousands of junk messages flooding them all at once.

A first-hand report indicates that the term is derived from a famous Monty Python sketch ("Well, we have Spam, tomato & Spam, egg & Spam, Egg, bacon & Spam...") that was current when spam first began arriving on the Internet. Spam is a trademarked Hormel meat product that was well-known in the U.S. Armed Forces during World War II.

We all get it but seldom do we hear it defined. Spam is very important to

We all need to treat spam as a news service. What do I mean by this you
ask? I get about 20 spam messages a day on average and consider it a free
news service of businesses to stay away from. In other words, when you get
a spam message be sure to "insert" a subject at the top of the message that
says "Another business that is a scam or is going bankrupt". The first part
of the subject is very clear and covers most of the spam you will get. The
other half is very important.

Many companies on the net right now are going bankrupt, in fact this number
is in the tens of thousands. You can bet 100% that if you get a message
from a company that is trying to sell you something that seems legitimate
they are trying to keep from going out of business. You can purchase their
wares but the odds are they will use your money to pay their creditors or
simply pocket it without sending you a thing.

Most people would probably pay for such a service that provided them with
updates on business scams and companies that are going under. But, it's
free for us all. As a matter of fact, I recently worked on a software
problem with one of Microsoft's tech support people. This guy was one of
the core database programmers that you just don't see everyday on the
street. During our work we had a short break while the program was
compiling so I asked him how long he worked for the largest company in the
world. He told me, just over two years.

Then it hit me, I asked him how Microsoft blocked spam. I figured this
grand company had some secret way of doing it and just had to know. He told
me that he gets about a hundred spams a day on average and that there is no
way to block it since it is just so rampant. So folks if Microsoft can't
stop it, spam is here to stay, so let's use it and save some of our hard
earned money.

Most people now know the official definition of spam- Unsolicited Commercial Email (UCE for short).

That definition does several things we should look at. It categorizes spam as commercial It limits it to email Calling anything unsolicited creates vagueness

Even though all the above things may be true, there are several more things about spam that seem far more annoying. First: Spam doesn't have to be commercial to be a nuisance. Second: Unsolicited commercialism is so widespread that you can't avoid it by just changing websites. Third: A lot of people give out their email address one day and don't understand why they get email the next day from that website.

Also what if Bill Gates decided to give $10,000 to the next 20 people who opened an email from him. That would be unsolicited, but who would care. (what if your spam filter tossed it out).

On the other hand there are people who will claim to be giving away money when they only want your bank account #. Don't give it to them.

Even if all the above were acceptable, what is it about spam that really, really gets your dander up? Isn't it the untruth. Isn't it the out and out deception involved? If all email were limited to truthful advertising and genuine value, wouldn't that be the solution?

Think about it, only offers of genuine value and truthful claims come to your inbox. Then we'd all have to make choices that (whichever choice you made) moved us forward.

Of course, there are a few things we should do to protect ourselves from problems. don't open unexpected attachments don't sign up for every get rich quick scheme you see remember that many, many online entrepreneurs will take your money and run. There probably isn't an absolute solution to spam. What is spam to one person is a god send to the next. Perhaps a national preference list would be better than a no-send list.

You can't really control the other drivers you must do what you can and that means operating your vehicle (whether it be a car, website, or business) in a safe, responsible manner.

And here is where networking comes in... Find content for your blog from article banks, where authors submit their work for reprint. List yourself in databases as one who accepts article submissions. Get to know other authors and publishers and share content with them. Syndicate your blogs in exchange with other bloggers. Watch your world explode with new opportunities.

Automation in business is a good thing, but it has its place. Nothing beats human communication when dealing with people and creating partnerships. Do you want to talk to an autoresponder? No, and I doubt anyone else does either.

Some of the new programs designed for the automation of article collection have legal issues to consider. The biggest being copyright infringement. Not every author wants their work reprinted, or they require control over where their work is displayed. (Which is as it should be.) Without manually seeking your content, you could very well find yourself being served papers for publishing someone else's work without permission.

Plagiarism is another issue. If you don't follow certain rules for reprinting contributory work, you stand to be hounded for plagiarism. Yet another sticky issue.

Some of the new programs mock safelists, or resemble FFA sites. Before long, those types of blog pages will become banned as well. Search engines will figure out a way to block non-informational blog pages, those that carry nothing but links or classifieds. (Is your head sore from hitting that brick wall yet?)

Still, there are other programs designed to post spam to blogs using the comments feature. This is referred to as comment spam. The only solution thus far, to battle comment spam, is to disallow your readers the option of leaving comments. This is a bad thing, because allowing your readers to interact with you is supposed to be one of the benefits of using this form of communication.

The makers of these programs may have had good intentions to start with, but have ultimately created Frankenstein's Monster. Many are stating that their programs are not spam, because they do not involve email. That is a cop out if I ever heard one. Spam is the transmission of unwanted stuff, whether it is sent to your inbox, or your blog, or even the search engines themselves. Search engines want relevant content, not pages of of keywords, or links. So feeding them page after page of nonsense is spam.

Everyone hates spam, except the spammers, so why be a part of something loathed by so many and embraced by a few? Bad business if you ask me.

The only real way to combat these issues is to simply not use the programs themselves. Do your due diligence and create a reputation as a trusted information provider, not a blog bomber, and your business will prosper. Using these programs will ultimately diminish your reputation and your livelihood.

Your customers are looking for information, a solution to a problem. Give that to them, not just endless pages of links. You will achieve your rightful spot in the ranks, and you stand a far better chance for longevity. There are good RSS tools available, you just need to look beneath the sales copy to find them. And if you are new to RSS and blogging, do some research. Find someone who knows, really knows what RSS is and how to use it, and ask some questions. Don't go out and spend buckets of money on something you're not sure how to use, because you could be doing yourself more harm than good.
